Teens join the fight against ‘Big Tobacco’

Several Northwestern High School students are already making great impressions on the political leaders of our state. Six teen members of Fighting Against Corporate Tobacco (FACT) met with Senator Bob Jauch, D-Poplar, on Nov. 12 to discuss with him their latest initiative. FACT members work to make the harms of Big Tobacco known to the public, especially other teenagers. “Manipulicious” is a campaign that uses action to highlight the dangers of candy-flavored tobacco products.
Jauch listened as Brianne Freeman, Chloe Hagenson, Taryn Neubauer, Morgyn Lombard, Mason Lombard and Becky Prochaska each expressed how tobacco has affected their lives and why they joined the fight. Each student had a unique perspective on the topic; however they all wanted to make sure teenagers make an educated decision before picking up tobacco products. Jauch had high praise for the students and all the work they are doing for the community. He told them Smoke-free Wisconsin was only possible because of FACT members like themselves. One of the students described the experience as “Awesome!”
