The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team defeated the College of St. Scholastica 72-54 in the third-place game of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic Sunday evening in Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
Jarrod Peterson led the Yellowjackets with a game-high 19 points. Former Northwestern Tiger Aaron Corry was next, coming off the bench to score a career-high 15 points. Brendan Bauer added nine points and Bronson Byrne had six.
“Coach just wants a guy with energy coming off the bench, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” said Corry, who transferred back to UWS after spending last season studying law enforcement at Lake Superior College. “Didn’t know what I wanted to do, major-wise, but I’m very happy to be back.”
The ’Jackets finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field, 42 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the free-throw line.

The Yellowjackets quickly turned the deficit into a 14-8 lead, thanks to a pair of Peterson 3-pointers, a 3-pointer by Austin Cahill and a basket by Corry.
After a CSS timeout and a basket by Alec Mortel, Superior scored nine of the next 11 points for a 25-12 lead.
The lead bounced back and forth between nine and 11 points, until Dahlman’s 3- and 2-point baskets got the Saints within 29-23 with 3:30 left in the half.
Corry’s 3-pointer put UWS up 34-25, but baskets by Johnson and Mortel made it a 36-29 game at the intermission.
UWS scored six of the first eight points it the second half and then held double-digit leads most of the remainder of the game.
Superior’s largest lead was 22 points after Peterson converted a 3-point play with 2:49 remaining.
Sunday’s win came after a disappointing 95-90 double overtime loss to Concordia-Moorhead.
“This was a big win,” Corry said. “We were disappointed after losing on Saturday, but we knew that this was a game we could win, and we came out and played the way we should.”
