Lady ’Jackets fall to Bulldogs

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 77-65 loss to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Tuesday night at Romano Gym in Duluth.

Tuesday’s win gives the Bulldogs a 21-4 advantage in the all-time Border Battle series.

UWS (2-1), which shot just 34.5 percent from the field, was led by Deandra Vavra and Sally Linzmeier with 18 points apiece.

The Yellowjackets went on a 6-0 run to start the game when Hillary Peterson completed a three-point play and Kristen Nett followed with a 3-pointer.

The lead changed hands a number of times throughout the first half until UMD took control of the game with four minutes left and led 40-32 at the intermission.

Vavra led UWS in the first half with 13 points while going 5-for-6 from the field.

After shooting 41 percent as a team in the first half, the Yellowjackets struggled in the second, shooting only 28 percent.

The majority of the Yellowjackets’ offense in the second half came from Linzmeier, who scored 15 points with four steals. Newcomer Grace Kennedy, who did not play in the first half, came off the bench and contributed three steals in nine minutes.

Alyssa Kerkhoff led UMD (3-1) with 21 points. Katrina Newman added 14 points and eight rebounds and freshman forward Taylor Meyer put in 12 points of her own, also grabbing eight boards.

The Yellowjackets (2-1) play again at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Northwestern College (2-1) in Roseville, Minn.
