The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season with an 86-74 loss to the Augsburg Auggies Monday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
UWS never led in the game and the score was tied once — 4-4 after baskets by Bronson Byrne and Brendan Bauer.
The Auggies took a pair of 13-point leads in the first half, the later coming at 38-25 with 4:10 left before the intermission.
UWS outscored Augsburg 14-6 down the stretch to make it a five-point game at 44-39 at the half.
Two baskets by Bauer early in the second half got the Yellowjackets within 46-43, but the Auggies answered with 12 of the next 13 points for a 58-44 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
Aaron Corry’s put-back basket stopped Superior’s scoring skid, and the ’Jackets managed to get within eight points three different times during the next four minutes, including 65-57 after a Jarrod Peterson 3-pointer.
Augsburg followed with six straight points to take a double-digit lead, which lasted the remainder of the game except at 77-68 after a Peterson steal and basket and 79-71 after a Johnquez Brooks 3-pointer.
Parker Hines led the Auggies with 23 points. The sophomore was 3-of-4 on 3-pointers and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Tyler Schmidt added 16 points; former UMD Bulldog Dan Kornbaum had 15 points and eight rebounds; Brett Rasmussen added 11 points and Noah Veach had 10.
Brooks led the Yellowjackets with 18 points, including three 3-point baskets; Peterson was next with 16 points; Bryne added 15 points; and Bauer had 10 points and six rebounds.
UWS will host the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic this weekend. Saturday’s games are St. Scholastica vs. UW-River Falls at 5 p.m. and Concordia College vs. UWS at 7 p.m. Sunday’s games are Concordia vs. UWRF at 3 p.m. and St. Scholastica vs. UWS at 5 p.m.
’JACKET JOTTINGS: Augsburg was 26-of-35 from the free-throw line, compared to 7-for-10 for UWS. … Each team grabbed 38 rebounds and had eight turnovers.
