UWS women win Ripon basketball title

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team defeated the University of Chicago 64-49 in the championship game of the Ripon College tournament Saturday at Wyman Gym in Ripon.

The Yellowjackets advanced to the title game with a 69-60 win over the host Ripon squad Friday night.

Sally Linzmeier led the way in the championship game, scoring a team-high 16 points. Connie Urmanski and Deandra Vavra each dropped in 14 as the Yellowjackets shot 33.3 percent from the field for the game.

Linzmeier also had a team-high nine rebounds; Vavra had five assists and five steals, both team highs; and five different players had one blocked shot.

For her effort on the weekend, Linzmeier was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. In the two victories, Linzmeier had 26 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and seven steals in 64 minutes of play. Also honored was Kristen Nett, who was chosen as a member of the all-tournament team.

On Friday night, Vavra and Nett paced UWS with 13 points apiece. Linzmeier added 10 points for the Yellowjackets, while Ripon’s Jill Van Eperen led all scorers with 15 points.

UWS led 29-28 at halftime and then outscored Ripon 40-32 in the second half.

The Yellowjackets (2-0) played at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday night. They play again at Northwestern College in St. Paul at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 28.
