Bong center offers free program Saturday

On Saturday at 10 a.m. the Richard I. bong Veterans Historical Center will present a program entitled “The Glider Riders: American’s Forgotten ‘Other’ Airborne Force: 1941-45” with Jim Hencinski.

Often overshadowed by the more glamorous paratroops, glider infantry was a crucial component of virtually all major airborne infantry operations. In addition to being able to deploy heavier weapons than individual paratroopers, glider deployment also ensured that squad-sized detachments would land in one spot, thus avoiding the scattered paratrooper ‘sticks’ that hampered some operations as precious time was lost concentrating troops before advancing on objectives. Mr. Hencinski’s program will explore this advantage and other fascinating aspects of this now largely forgotten part of U.S. airborne operations during the Second World War.

Jim Hencinski is a retired U.S. Army Warrant Officer and military history enthusiast who enjoys uncovering and sharing obscure aspects of military history. The program is free and open to the public. The Center’s exhibition galleries will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

The Richard I. bong Veterans Historical Center announces free admission for Veterans through Nov. 17, the week of Veterans Day, to honor those who have served and sacrificed to safe guard our freedoms.
