Panthers girls take second in Amery
For the second week in a row the Superior Cathedral Panthers eighth-grade girls travel basketball team finished in second place in a Great Northwest Basketball League Tournament.
The latest tournament was Saturday in Amery, where the Panthers went 3-1 on the day, beginning with a 27-24 come-from-behind win over tournament host Amery White. The Superior girls also defeated Unity 32-11 and Turtle Lake 35-16 before losing to River Falls in the championship game 35-25.
Against Amery White, the Panthers trailed 10-11 at the half and were behind 16-20 after three quarters before outscoring Amery 11-4 in the final frame. For the Panthers, Maggie Brown finished as high scorer with 12 points, Carly Thatcher added six points, Hannah Kolanczyk had four, Lauren Sickler three, and Julianna Certa-Werner two.
The Panthers led Unity 6-4 at the end of quarter one, pulled away 14-4 at the half and coasted to a 32-11 win. High scorer was Sickler with 12 points, Kolanczyk added seven points, Thatcher and Payton Glonek chipped in four each, Kylee Maccoux added three and Brown had two.
Against Turtle Lake, the Panthers led from the start and jumped out to a 13-4 lead after quarter one. The lead grew to 20-5 at the half and the game finished with a comfortable 19-point victory. Brown led the Panthers with 10 points, Kolanczyk added eight, Thatcher seven, Sickler four, Maccoux three, and Glonek two. Nicole Presuhn added a free throw.
River Falls also entered the championship game undefeated with three solid wins over St Croix Falls, 42-14; Amery Red, 56-16; and Cameron 35-18.
The Panthers jumped out to a 13-11 first-quarter lead, but ran into some foul trouble and ended-up trailing 20-15 at the half. Superior wasn’t able to close the gap and was behind 29-23 after the three quarters before losing by 10 points. Sickler led Panther scorers with 10 points. Brown added six points, Thatcher had four, Kolanczyk three, and Maccoux two.
The Panthers are in action Dec. 1 at Osceola. Other teams in the GNBL Tournament include Amery White, St. Croix Falls, Osceola White, Chisago Lakes, Grantsburg, Siren and Glenwood City.
