Bob’s Chop Suey House remembered

What are your memories of Bob’s Chop Suey House?

First listed in the 1959 city directory as Robert (Bob) Huie; Complete Chinese and American Menu, many today remember it as a cozy spot above the House of Charm beauty salon on 1307 Tower Ave.

With its private booths and tea served in a beautiful teapot and cups, it was a favorite dining place for Superiorites. Join us Nov. 11 for our History Sunday when Doris Magdzas talks about her 20 years working as a waitress at Bob’s Chop Suey House. Find out why she says she loved every day of working there. You’ll also be able to take a free tour of our current exhibit, “Open ‘til 9: Thursday Nights on Tower,” which recalls the days when stores in Superior’s downtown stayed open late for shoppers. The restaurant is featured in the exhibit, as well as a print showing a cozy booth in Bob’s, painted by artist, Claudia Stack. Maybe you can share your memories of Bob’s Chop Suey restaurant afterwards. The program, held at DCHS, 1101 John Ave., and is free and open to the public. It begins at 2 p.m. Our fundraising raffle will be drawn at the November History Sunday. You can still buy tickets this week though, to win one of three beautiful prizes.

Stop in to buy the tickets at DCHS and take a look at them. Third prize is a basket of merchandise donated by DCHS; second prize is a Pam Dull print of the Lift Bridge, donated by Mick MacKenzie and framed by Kelly and Gary Reed, and Barb Mattson; and first prize, a handmade quilt and rag rug donated by 4-Corners Crafters.

The raffle is to raise funds to cover the extra costs of putting in our new elevator.

Progress is coming along by LaPorte General Contracting, Access Lifts and Tower Plumbing, as well as city of Superior employees. Donations are welcome.

Our History Theatre’s next production is the fifth annual 1943 USO Canteen Radio Show on Dec. 8 at 2 and 6:30 p.m., and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.

Join Bob Hope and friends, along with Randy Lee and the Northland Youth Music Group, and swing to the music of the 1940s. All tickets to this event are $15.

Can you believe the holidays are before us? While at DCHS for an event, stop in our Museum Shop. Not only do we have copies of books on Superior and Douglas County’s history, but we also have enlarged photo prints and warm DCHS sweatshirts.
