A chance to meet pen pal

Donna McClellen had a dual purpose for attending the event. She supports Obama and Biden, but the 72-year-old also wanted to meet her pen pal.

McClellen has been writing letters to the president since he took office in 2009. After all that correspondence, she felt she should be there in person.

“Just in case he read my letters,” said McClellen, a retired legal secretary. “I write them to the president but I know he shares them because I don’t always get a response from him I get it from (Biden).

“I just want him to go back and tell Obama that ‘Yeah, she was there,’” McClellen said.

She came with her 22-year-old nephew, Nick Olson of Superior.

“This is the one who needs the answers,” she said.

For Olson, the big question on his mind was what help is available for the hundreds of people who lost their jobs at Georgia-Pacific’s Duluth plant.
