Congressman Sean Duffy may not have been able to convince traditionally Democratic-voting Douglas County, where he captured less than 40 percent of the vote, that he was the best choice for a return trip to Washington D.C.
Duffy, who launched his congressional career more than two years ago in his hometown of Hayward won the race with 56 percent of the vote over Democratic challenger Pat Kreitlow, a former reporter and anchor.
“Aside from my wife Rachel agreeing to marry me, and the birth of my six kids, representing my state, my friends and my family in the United States Congress has been the greatest honor of my life,” Congressman Duffy said Tuesday night in a prepared statement. “And I’m overjoyed that you’ve thought enough of me, and the work that I’ve done in only 2 years to give me this great opportunity yet again.”
Dave Franks of Superior, who met the congressman Monday at Perkins during Duffy’s last push, an 1,184 mile trek through the district thanked Duffy for the work he’s done over the last two years.
“You’re doing a great job,” Franks said.
Duffy said some of his priorities during a second term include working on tax reform and finding a bipartisan way to balance the budget.
He also sees opportunity for the nation to work toward energy independence.
“Thank you to all of the people across Wisconsin who stood together because they believe Washington can do better,” Kreitlow said in a prepared statement. “That we can work to create jobs, grow our economy, and get Washington working. Thank you for believing in this campaign and for building the strongest grassroots operation this district has ever seen. I am so grateful for your support and for what we were able to accomplish together. I will never forget that, or the people of Wisconsin we have met throughout this campaign. I congratulate Congressman Duffy and wish him and his family the best of luck.”
