Yellowjacket hoop teams drop exhibition games

Junior center Brett Ervin and sophomore forward Ben Bucholz led the way with 21 points each for the University of Minnesota Duluth, as the Bulldogs easily handled the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets 91-65 at Romano Gym in an exhibition matchup.

Saturday's contest remained close during the first half, with the Bulldogs leading 44-36 at the break. UMD came out stronger in the second half, building a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

The Bulldogs shot 63 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Yellowjacket offense cooled off in the second half, shooting 35 percent from the field. Thanks in large part to six steals from freshman point guard Austin Pohlen, the Bulldogs held UWS to 29 second half points.

UMD controlled the boards throughout the game, out-rebounding the Yellowjackets 39-23. Bucholz pulled down 11 rebounds of his own as part of his double-double. Freshman guard Calahan Skogman was perfect from the floor, compiling 16 points, including four 3-pointers, in his Bulldog debut.

Jarrod Peterson led UWS with 19 points and six rebounds. Johnquez Brooks added 13 points and Bronson Byrne had 10.

The Bulldogs officially begin their regular season next Sunday with a 3 p.m. clash against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at Romano Gym.

Women fall to Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan defeated Wisconsin-Superior 56-43 Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Connie Urmanski scored 12 points for Division III Wisconsin-Superior, and Alyssa Colla led Division II Northern Michigan with 14.
