A Duluth woman faces felony charges for allegedly altering checks she wrote out for a friend with failing eyesight.

Deanna Rae Thomas, 53, is facing eight counts of forgery in Douglas County Circuit Court. She faces arraignment on the charges following a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint:

Thomas was helping a friend with failing eyesight by writing out checks for her and having the friend sign them. According to bank records, however, Thomas altered six of the checks to take out more money than was intended. For example, a $40 check was cashed for $325 and a $68 check was cashed for $368.

In addition, two checks made out to Thomas without her friend’s authorized.

At her initial appearance in early October, a $2,000 signature bond was set. Thomas was ordered to have no contact with the woman whose checks she is accused of altering. Her next court date is slated for Dec. 17.
