Free 'Feline Fix' dates scheduled in response to Duluth cat hoarding case

In response to the discovery of the hoarding of more than 65 cats and kittens in the City of Duluth in October, Animal Allies’ Northland Spay/Neuter program is offering all residents of the Duluth and Superior an opportunity to have their felines “fixed” for no fee.

The free “Feline Fix” events are scheduled for Nov. 16 and 30 and Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Appointments are required, space is limited. For more information contact Northland Spay/Neuter at (218) 623-6342.

It’s been estimated that one unsterilized female cat and one unsterilized male cat and their offspring can result in a staggering 370,000 additional kittens in seven years. The number one reason cited by pet owners for not sterilizing is cost.

“In the past, hoarding cases like the one we faced this October would have resulted in the cats and kittens being euthanized,” states Meggan Neve, Program Manager of Northland Spay/Neuter. “Spay and neuter initiatives, such as our Feline Fix events, are an effort to be proactive in order to help cat owners avoid unexpected litters of kittens. We encourage all pet owners to spay and neuter to prevent the needless neglect and loss of cats and dogs.”

Northland Spay/Neuter is a partnership of Animal Allies Humane Society and Twin Ports Spay-Neuter Clinic, PLLC, an independent, veterinarian owned medical practice. High-quality, low-cost spay/neuter targeting cats & dogs in households earning less than $40,000 year is made possible by financial and administrative support from Animal Allies Humane Society.

With the help of a two-year grant from PetSmart Charities®, Animal Allies’ Northland Spay/Neuterprogram offers free cat spay/neuter services, rabies vaccination, and micro-chipping for residents in 54880 (Superior) and 55802, 55805, 55806, and parts of 55812 (Duluth).

“Feline Fix” is also made possible through generous support from the Francis Curran Foundation as well as contributions to Animal Allies from individuals, families, and area businesses.
