Spartan girls win LSC swimming title

The Superior High School diving and swimming team won 8-of-12 events on the way to a fourth straight Lake Superior Conference championship Saturday afternoon in the SHS pool.

The Superior High School diving and swimming team won 8-of-12 events on the way to a fourth straight Lake Superior Conference championship Saturday afternoon in the SHS pool.

Kaitlin Heinen led Spartans with record-setting wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. The Spartan record in the IM was set by Tricia Nye in 2002. Heinen’s swim in the butterfly reset her own team record, and set new pool and conference marks.

Spartan sophomore Giselle Sziron won gold to lead SHS divers; senior captain Grace Elonen won a one-hundreth of a second victory in the 50 freestyle with a late fast drive to the wall; and senior captain Tori Johnson overcame a nagging knee injury and powered to a commanding lead while winning the 100 backstroke.

Spartan relays dominated the meet with Tori Johnson, Nikki Hansen, Heinen and Julie Snyder taking the medley; Heinen, Elonen, Kjersten Lisak and Snyder winning the 200 free relay; and Johnson, Lisak, Snyder and Elonen winning a close race with Proctor-Hermantown in the 400 free relay.

Also contributing to Superior’s team title were Kaitlin Sanders and Hansen, who went 2-3 in the breaststroke; Lisak and Alysha Johnson swam to 2-3 in the 200 freestyle; Lauren Magnusen, Ashley Kittelson, Britta Bergstrom and Savanna Berthiaume each had notable swims; while Hailee Mahan and Rawia Maamoun placed well in diving.

Superior will next compete at the WIAA Sectional meet at Hudson Middle School. The diving event is at 5 p.m. today while swimming is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
