What is a quilt other than bits and pieces of fabric, thread, and a layer of cotton batting? A quilt is also made of creativity, friendship, concern, love, sympathy, joy and support.
The members of Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild have again combined their efforts to create a spectacular quilt to call attention to the art of quilt-making and to raise support for local and national nonprofit organizations. This year’s quilt will be raffled off at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 — you need not be present to win.
Proceeds of the raffle quilt will be donated to the Upper Midwest region of Quilts of Valor, www.QOVF-Uppermidwest.org to help defray the cost of shipping the quilts to U.S. service members around the globe.
“The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover ALL combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. This foundation is not about politics; it’s about people.”
Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild also plans to donate quilts and supplies such as fabric, batting and thread to the local chapter of Project Linus, www.projectlinus.
org. Project Linus distributes new handmade quilts and blankets to children in local hospitals, shelters, social agencies or “anywhere that a child might be in need of a hug”.
The Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild raffle quilt, “Northern Lights II”, is traveling to area quilt shops where it is on display for a period of time and tickets are available for purchase. The cost is $3 per ticket.
Raffle tickets may also be purchased directly from Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild or requested by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild was founded in 2001 and is comprised of about 70 women — all ages and skill levels — from northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The organization’s first raffle quilt in 2010 raised over $5,000 in ticket sales and was donated to a local organization, Program to Aid Victims of Sexual Assault.
The Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild provides support to quilters through educational programs, events and quilting-related efforts that help our community. Membership is $20 per year. Contact email@example.com for information.
