Grand Rapids sinks Spartan swimmers

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks swam past the Superior High School girls swimming team 126-60 Tuesday evening in the SHS pool.

The host Spartans won three events. Kaitlin Heinen had a hand in all three Spartan wins as she won the 200 and 500 freestyle races and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team along with Victoria Johnson, Nicole Hansen Grace Elonen.

The race of the night was the 500-yard freestyle where Heinen won with a time of 5:21.11, just a head of Rapids’ Solveig Viren, who finished second in 5:21.43.

Giselle Sziron finished second in the diving event and Hansen took seco0nd in the 100-yard breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:16.58.

Sziron also finished third in the Agate Diving Classic Saturday at Two Harbors.

The Spartans will be going for their fourth straight Lake Superior Conference crown when they host the LSC meet on Saturday. The diving event begins at 10:15 a.m. and swimming begins at 1 p.m.
