SHS swimmers win, volleyball team ousted from playoffs

The Superior High School girls swimming team defeated Proctor-Hermantown 92-78 Thursday night at the Superior pool.

The Spartans took first place in eight of the 11 events swam.

“I knew we’d take a lot of firsts, but the question was would we have enough depth,” said George Lehman, SHS head coach.

Superior’s depth came through in the relay races, where Superior A won all three events and Superior B took third in two races and fourth in the other.

Lehman also praised the performance of Julie Snyder on the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“She’s not usually on those relays, but she stepped up and helped us win,” Lehman said.

Individually, Kaitlin Heinen won the 200 individual medley with a new pool record of 2:19.64. Heinen’s time was just off the SHS record time of 2:19.56 set by Tricia Nye in 2002. Susanne Olson of Eau Claire Memorial set the previous 200 IM record for the SHS pool during the 1995 sectionals.

Heinen also won the 500 freestyle; Grace Elonen won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly; and Tori Johnson won the 100 backstroke.

On Tuesday night the Spartans lost at Duluth East 102-80.

Heinen won the 200 IM and 100 freestyle and was a member of the winning 200 free relay along with Elonen, Kjersten Lisak and Victoria Johnson.

Superior’s Elonen, Julie Snyder, Britta Bergstrom and Lisak also teamed up to win the 400 free relay.

Superior hosts Grand Rapids at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
