Kontny earns NAHL weekly honors

The Johnstown Tomahawks are on a three-game winning streak thanks in part to team captain Mitch Kontny, a former Superior Spartan.

The former Superior Spartan was instrumental in Johnstown’s recent sweep of the Janesville Jets as he recorded three goals and an assist over the two-game series.

In the opening game’s 5-3 win, Kontny scored the game’s first goal and added an assist on the last goal. In game two, a 4-1 win, it was Kontny again scoring the first goal of the game, which like the night before, also came in the game’s first minute. He also added a goal midway through the third period to secure the win.

For his effort Kontny, who is tied for the team lead with four goals, was named the North American Hockey League’s North Division Star of the Week.

“Mitch is a great leader and he leads by example,” Tomahawks coach Jason Spence said.

“He’s a physical player and works really hard at getting to pucks first and then capitalizing on his chances.”
