Spartan girls run to LSC title

The Superior High School girls cross country team finished first at the Lake Superior Conference meet Thursday at the Far Par Golf Course in Duluth.

The SHS boys finished third, the JV girls finished first and the JV boys were second.

Leah Holmes was the fastest Spartan girl, finishing fourth in 15:46.9. Teammates Natalie Kintop, Rachel Dixon and Malley O’Brien were right behind, finishing in 5-7 place. Hermantown’s Natalie Stauber won the race in 15:00.0.

Chris Carey paced the Superior boys, finishing fourth in 16:27.8. Proctor’s Matt Welch won the race in 15:11.1.

Up next for the Spartans is the WIAA sectional meet Oct. 20 in Menomonie. The top two teams, as well as the first five individuals from non-qualifying teams, advance to the state meet Oct. 27 in Wisconsin Rapids.
