UWS RDP: ‘Senior Night’ spoiled for UWS women

UWS soccer teams also in action; hoop teams to host ‘Jam Night’

Kelly Schuh had 15 kills and nine digs as UW-Eau Claire spoiled senior night for the University of Wisconsin-Superior volleyball team with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 victory in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night before 207 spectators at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Yellowjacket seniors honored were Farrah Wirtz, Esko; Salann Gilbert, Solon Springs; and Nikki Gosson, Mankato, Minn.

Anne Satterless and Amy Bomgren combined on 27 kills for the Blugolds (17-9 overall, 3-2 WIAC).

Overall, Gosson had eight kills, Farah Wirtz had nine digs, Kitty Tynen had six digs and Keely Deadrick had 31 set assists to lead the Yellowjackets (16-10, 0-5).

In game two, Vikki Vinikor led UWS with nine kills, Gosson added eight kills and Jessica Dvergsten had six Lauren Peterson also recorded her first kill as an Yellowjacket.

Trailing 14-7 in game three, UWS rallied to get within 20-19, but the Blugolds scored the next five points to complete the sweep.

The Yellowjackets (16-10, 0-5 WIAC) will play in the UW-La-Crosse tournament this weekend.

On Friday they play Loras at 5:30 p.m. and Hamline at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday they’ll face St. Thomas at 10:30 a.m. and Luther at 12:30 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

Ryan Linsmayer’s 56th-minute goal and Matt Elder’s shutout goalkeeping gave UWS a 1-0 nonconference victory over Northland College on Tuesday at Ashland.

Linsmayer scored on an assist by Gabriel Stork da Silva but the Yellowjackets (8-5-1) were unable to score on any of their other 23 shots at Lumberjacks goalie Colton Schreyer.

Elder stopped seven shots by Northland (0-14).

The Yellowjackets are at St. Olaf at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Women’s Soccer

The Yellowjackets lost to Hamline 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul.

Kalea Hatlewick had 16 saves for UWS (3-10, 0-6).

Kesley Carraciolo scored twice and Heather Hollinger added a goal to support Molly Jacobs’ seventh shutout of the season for Hamline (9-3-1).

UWS hosts Finlandia at 4 p.m. Friday and plays at UW-La Crosse at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Basketball

The Yellowjacket men’s and women’s basketball teams will host their inaugural ’Jacket Jam at Mertz Mortorelli Gym at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.

The evening will include a skills competition, 3-point shooting contest, slam dunk contest and scrimmages for both teams. There will be giveaways and contests for fans as well.

Admission is free.
