Superior volleyball team loses finale; Anderson-Petroske, Kittelson named to LSC soccer team
The Superior High School volleyball team lost to the Ashland Oredockers 3-1 (25-10, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24) Thursday night in the SHS gym.
The Spartans honored their seniors prior to Thursday’s match. Those honored, along with their parents were Taylor Johnson, Ashley Gronlund, Alison Wainionpaa, Alex Olson, Haley Tribbey, Dannie Patterson and Maggie Kowalik.
With Ashland leading 12-10, the Oredockers scored the final 13 points to win game one 25-10.
Superior led by four points early twice in game two and trailed by two points later before finishing off Ashland with the final two points for the 25-23 win.
Game three was tied 18-18, but that was when Ashland took over by scoring seven of the next eight points for the 25-19 win.
Game four went down to the wire with the game tied at 21, 22, 23 and 24 before the Oredockers scored the final two points to win the match.
In an unreported match on Tuesday, the Hermantown Hawks clinched a share of the LSC title with a 3-0 win over Superior in Hermantown.
Stephanie Kallberg had 14 kills and Nicole Kienzle added 11 as the Hawks scored a resounding 25-12, 25-5, 25-11 victory to improve to 18-2 overall and 5-0 atop the LSC.
Superior was led by Rachel Fregin’s eight set assists.
The SHS girls also lost to Duluth East 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24) on Oct. 4.
Superior is the No. 11 seed for the WIAA tournament and will play at No. 6 Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.

The SHS boys soccer team wrapped up its season with a 10-0 loss at Hudson in a WIAA regional game Tuesday evening.
Hudson hosts Menomonie, a 1-0 winner over New Richmond, in a regional final game Thursday.
The Spartans ended their regular season with a 5-0 loss at Ashland Thursday evening.
Greg Lesneski tallied three times as the Oredockers ended the season with a perfect record of 7-0 in the LSC.
