Flag waves for Army sergeant

Roy Rusk of Lake Nebagamon and Superior was proud to serve his country during World War II

At 9 a.m. Friday, an American flag is raised in honor of that service in front of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center.

Rusk was born July 1, 1916, in Page, N.D. He enlisted into active service on March 3, 1941, and served with 878th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company at Tec 4. Overseas for 36 months, Sgt. Rusk wore the American Defense Service ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with three bronze battle stars, five overseas service bars and Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged honorably from the Army at the Separation Center, Fort Sheridan, Ill., on June 24, 1945.

Roy returned home to his parents, Ida and Homer Rusk of Lake Nebagamon. Soon after, he married Dorothy Mattson and together they had three children, Donna, Jim and Jean. For many years he worked for the former Great Northern Railroad and the Superior school district. He later retired to Lake Nebagamon, enjoying his family and hobbies of hunting, fishing and woodworking. He passed away Aug. 14, 2002.
