Melvin J. Esselstrom, 88, of Lakeside, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Melvin J. Esselstrom, 88, of Lakeside, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1924 in Lakeside to Alfred and Mary (Bachman) Esselstrom.

He married Marlene Thomas on Nov. 12, 1966 and celebrated 46 years of marriage.

He was employed for over 40 years as a grader operator for the Douglas County Highway Department. Prior to this, he was employed with Reuben Johnson Construction for many years.

Melvin was previously a longtime member of Lakeside Baptist Church and recently attended Hope Congregational Church. He loved farming and owned and operated a family farm in Lakeside for 88 years.

In addition to his wife Marlene, he is survived by two sisters, Nancy Rautio, Superior, Inez Berglund, Poplar and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Janelle, his parent, three sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service on Saturday, Oct, 13 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Ells, of Lakeside Baptist Church and Pastor Michael Casperson of Hope Congregational Church, co-officiating.

Burial will be Lakeside Cemetery in Lakeside.

Pallbearers for the service will be Robin Berglund, Chuck Martin, Al Johnson, Art Preo, Jerry Nykanen and Duane Esselstrom.
