Yellowjacket volleyball team wins twice

Soccer teams tie and lose Saturday against Whitewater

DULUTH — The University of Wisconsin-Superior soccer teams enjoyed mixed success Saturday afternoon against UW-Whitewater at Public Schools Stadium.

The Yellowjackets women started the day with a 5-1 loss before the men’s teams from both schools played to a 1-1 double overtime tie.

In the men game, the Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the game when Ben Royce scored with an assist from Alberto Rivera-Garcia.

After Royce took a centering pass from Rivera-Garcia, Whitewater goalkeeper Mike Mikesell got his hands on Royce’s shot, but the ball squirted up in the air and barely crossed the goal line as Mikesell dove to catch the ball.

The Warhawks almost tied the game with 17:55 left in the first half when Derek Rider put the ball off the cross bar on an open shot at the right side of the goal.

UWW tied the game with less than nine minutes remaining when Logan Fye scored with an assist from Sam Kuchenruether.

UWS, which was outshot 23-15 for the game, outshot UWW 3-0 in the first overtime and 2-1 in the second.

Mikesell had four saves for UWW and Matt Elder stopped eight shots for UWS.

Women’s soccer

Whitewater got goals from five different players in the opener and outshot the Lady Yellowjackets 30-5.

Sara Sedlar, Emily Stocks and Jenna Woodson gave UWW a 3-0 lead.

UWS made it a 3-1 game in the 73rd minute when Katelyn Adams scored with assists from Chelsea Cossin and Mallory Engen.

Victoria Musial and Erin Mrazek finished the scoring for the Warhawks with goals in the final 15 minutes.

Alexandra Paige had 10 saves for Superior and Emily Haeger had one for Whitewater.

Volleyball

UWS defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) University 25-15, 24-26, 25-19, 25-13 and Carleton College 25-15, 25-22, 25-22 Saturday afternoon in Carleton’s Homecoming Weekend tournament in Northfield, Minn.

Against Buena Vista, Vikkin Vinokur had six assists for UWS (15-8), Keely Deadrick added 31 set assists and nine digs. Farrah Wirtz had 14 digs.

Against Carleton College, Kitty Tynen had 16 kills and nine digs, Jessica Dvergsten added nine kills, Deadrick had 29 set assists and Wirtz 11 digs.

  • Morgan Cizauskas had 43 set assists and 21 digs to lead Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 15-9 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night before 320 fans at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

    Robyn Eggert added 31 digs for Oshkosh (13-10 overall, 1-2 WIAC).

    Nikki Gosson had 16 kills to lead the Yellowjackets (0-4 WIAC), while Keely Deadrick had 49 set assists and 21 digs.

    Carleton College Tournament

    UWS def. Carleton 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22)

    UWS def. Buena Vista 3-1 ((25-15, 24-26, 25-19, 25-13).
