Hounds sweep Spartan spikers

The Superior High School volleyball team came up a bit short in a 3-0 loss to the Duluth East Greyhounds Thursday night in the SHS gym. East swept the non-conference match with wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 26-24.

All three matches were back-and-forth and the first game was as close as it gets with nine ties, including 20-20.

The Spartans held a number of leads in the opener, 4-1 early on and 20-19 late. East then took over and scored the final six points for the 25-20 win.

Game two was just as close as the opener. Superior’s latest lead was 16-15 and the game was tied at 16, 19 and 20 down the stretch before East once again finished strong by scoring five of the final six points for the 25-21 win.

Game three was much of the same as Superior held a pair of four-point leads at 11-7 and 12-8.

There were then ties at 12, 13 and 16 before East opened up a 23-18 lead. Superior then scored the next five points to tie the game at 23-23.

After another tie at 24-24, Superior had a chance to take the lead but served the ball into the net. East then completed the sweep by scoring the next point.

The Spartans will be at Hermantown on Tuesday and Ashland Thursday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
