Heinen sets pool record at Taconite Invite

The Superior High School girls swimming team finished third at the Taconite Invitational Saturday in the Mesabi East pool in Aurora, Minn.

Kaitlin Heinen led the Spartans on the day by swimming her fastest 200 freestyle race this season to set a new Mesabi East pool record. Heinen also swam to first in the 100 backstroke against the strong 11-team field. Nikki Hansen, Grace Elonen and Kjersten Lisak joined Heinen on the second place 200 medley relay.

Giselle Sziron won silver in diving in her second ever 11-dive meet. Elonen came from behind to fight to third in the 100 freestyle.

Other top six finishes for the Spartans included Hansen, fourth in the 100 breaststroke; Elonen, fifth in the 50 free; and Heinen, Lisak, Julie Snyder and Elonen, fourth in the 200 free relay.

“We were several swimmers short of full strength and still placed near the top,” SHS coach George Lehman said. “Hopefully we will recover from a number of injuries before the big meets at the end of the month.”

Superior is back in action at 5 p.m. Thursday at Cloquet.
