SPARTAN RDP: Superior teams in action

The Superior High School athletic department was busy over the weekend with the cross country, volleyball and boys soccer teams in action.

Cross country

The SHS runners competed in the Hibbing Invitational Thursday. The Spartan girls finished second as a team and the boys were third.

Duluth East won the girls team title and Cloquet won the boys title.

Hermantown’s Natalie Stauber won the girls’ 4K race in 15:35.2 and Cloquet’s Dylan Marvel was the fastest in the boys’ 5k race in 16:31.5.

Malley O’Brien was the top SHS girl runner, finishing in fifth place in 16:07.7. Evan Walpole finished fourth overall for the Spartan boys with a time of 16:54.8.

Up next for the Spartans is Saturday’s Swain Meet in Duluth.

Boys Soccer

The Spartans split at the Chippewa Falls Quadrangular Saturday, defeating La Crosse Logan 2-0 and losing to Sparta 5-0.

Superior then won 4-2 Monday at Wasuburn.

Sergei Hanka’s natural hat trick in the first half spurred Duluth Denfeld to a 5-0 victory over Superior in a Lake Superior Conference high school boys soccer game Tuesday at the SHS soccer fields.

Parker Adams and Zack Braack each had two assists for the Hunters (7-5-1 overall, 4-1-1 LSC), who moved into second place in the conference.

SHS is at Ashland at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Volleyball

The Spartans lost to Duluth Denfeld 3-1 Tuesday night in the SHS gym.

The Spartans trailed 23-17 in the opening game before scoring nine of the final 10 points for a 26-24 win.

Denfeld rolled to wins of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-15 in the next three games.

Superior also went 0-4 at Saturday’s Duluth East Invitational.

The Spartans lost to the host Greyhounds 2-0, and Cambridge-Isanti, Barnum and Irondale by 2-1 scores.

Superior hosts Duluth East at 7 p.m. Thursday.
