Undefeated Raiders rout Spartans

The Hudson Raiders proved to the largest crowd in years at Ole Haugsrud Field Friday night that their undefeated record was no fluke as they defeated the Superior High School football team and spoiled the Spartans homecoming with a 43-6 victory.

The Raiders, ranked No. 15 in Wisconsin, recovered a fumble on the game’s opening kickoff and never looked back as they improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Rivers Conference.

Dan Loughney led the Raiders charge with five touchdowns runs, including one from 3 yards out on the third play of the game. The senior, who also scored on runs of 24, 3, 3 and 7 yards, finished with 70 yards on the ground on 12 carries.

Hudson also got a safety from Ethan Stanchik, who tackled Superior’s punter in the end zone after the snap went over his head, and a 5-yard touchdown run, and extra-point kick, from Wade Malecha.

Superior’s only touchdown came on Anthony Valentine’s 4-yard run around the right end with 5:08 left in the first half.

Valentine set up his own score when he recovered a Hudson fumble and the Spartans moved the ball 66 yards in 11 plays. McKenzie Schwarz’s extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the score 22-6 in favor of Hudson.

Offensively for Superior, Spencer Urban was 6-of-17 passing for 34 yards. Kyle Turkowski led the Spartans on the ground with 25 yards rushing on one carry. Nick Mehlum added a 17-yard carry, Ben Erickson had 13 yards and Jaylon Brown had 12.

Addison Schwarz, Raheem Vann and Erickson caught two passes apiece and Valentine had one catch.

Erickson, Wisconsin’s leading tackler, had 16 tackles, including 11 solo. Valentine and Morgan Johnson added 11 tackles apiece.

Hudson, which outgained Superior 404-138 in total yards, was led by Joseph Kelly’s 77 yards rushing on nine carries. Malecha added 52 yards rushing and Alex Paulson had 36.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior lost lineman Sam Freeman to an injury early in the second quarter. … Hudson’s defense didn’t allow a Spartan first down until there was 44 seconds left in the first quarter. … The Spartans (3-3, 2-3) face another undefeated team when they play Menomonie (6-0, 5-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at UW-Stout. Menomonie defeated Eau Claire North 40-12 Friday night.
