Hole-in-one on father’s birthday

Mike Lattery, owner of the Poplar Golf Course, said Tom Wiisanen told the clubhouse staff he smiled and said a big “Thanks Dad” after realizing his accomplishment.

On Sunday, the frosty fall morning at Poplar Golf Course delayed tee-off times for about two hours to let the sun warm up the course.

Brothers Tom and Jerry Wiisanen sat out the delay with many other golfers in the clubhouse. They talked about their late father, Harry, whose birthday was that day, and how much he loved golf.

Once the brothers hit the course, they enjoyed some terrific golf and just had fun. When they got to the fourth tee — the No. 1 handicap hole on the course — they became more serious.

Tom Wiisanen hit his 3-wood into a strong wind at the 205-yard uphill hole. The shot appeared to be a little strong, but it was right at the pin.

When the brothers got to the hole Tom looked behind the green, nervous to look in the cup. Jerry went straight to the cup and let out a whoop — it was a hole-in-one on the par 3 hole.

Mike Lattery, owner of the Poplar Golf Course, said Tom Wiisanen told the clubhouse staff he smiled and said a big “Thanks Dad” after realizing his accomplishment.

“It was their father’s birthday that neither brother will forget,” Lattery said.
