Hermantown: Enjoy old fashioned family fun at the Engwalls Corn Maze Hootenanny from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature Cowboy Fast draw demonstrations, music, bonfires, contests and prizes, with food and beverages available from Black Woods. Admission is free. Regular rates of $8 for adults, $7 for children apply to visit the corn maze, located at 4749 Hermantown Road.

Superior: The Eagles Auxiliary hosts a fish fry every Friday from 4:30-7 p.m. at 1710 N. 12th St. The group serves fish, shrimp, clams, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, baked potato, french fries, jo jos, dinner rolls, coleslaw or salad, milk, coffee and dessert, with a different special each week. Prices vary and take outs are available. Open to the public.

Duluth: Lake Superior Singles meet at 6 p.m. With Oktoberfest time in Germany, we’ll do our part on this side of the Atlantic at Grandma’s in Canal Park. Expect additional menu items of German cuisine and maybe some “oompah” band entertainment. Call (218) 940-2248 to register.

Superior: Barker’s Island Farmers Market runs 8 a.m. to noon near the SS Meteor, rain or shine.

Iron River: The Friends of the Iron River Library will hold a Flea Market, Craft and Book Sale at the Iron River Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Area crafters and artists will offer their specialties, and a plentiful supply of hardcover and paperback books for all ages will be on sale, along with book bags. Duluth: Hartley Nature Center hosts an apple pressing family event with apple crafts and activities at 10 a.m. at 3001 Woodland Ave. Cost is $10 for member families, $15 for nonmember families. Siren: The Humane Society of Burnett County holds its third annual “Walk for the Animals” fundraiser from 1-4 p.m. at Veterans Park during the Siren Harvestfest. Following the walk is a lookalike contest for dogs and their owners and a “Wee Waggers Race” for dogs 25 pounds or under. Admission is $15. Walk-ins welcome.

Cable: The public is invited to attend two events at Redbery Books in downtown Cable during Cable Area Fall Festival. From 1-2:30 p.m. there will be a book signing for Diana Randolph’s new book of poetry and paintings inspired by the natural world, “Beacons of the Earth and Sky.” Following the book signing, join the fun at a book launch for Jim Brakken’s latest book DARK at the Rivers Eatery at 2:30 p.m. Hear a sample from DARK, a book of poetry and short stories. Superior: Celebrate the St. Louis River estuary when the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve holds a Kayaking Cook Out. Kayakers should meet a 2 p.m. at the LSNERR Building on Barkers Island. A cookout, brat feed and social will be held at 6 p.m. The cookout is open to paddlers and the public. Admission is $15 to kayak or $5 if you bring your own boat. Cookout is $15.

Sunday

Duluth: Great Lakes Worm Watch will hold a discussion/demonstration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Moose Mountain Scientific and Natural Area (Hwy. 61, north on Lester River Road, park in Lot E). Scientists from UMD’s Natural Resources Research Institute will show how earthworms impact the forest ecosystem and teach earthworm survey techniques. Moose Mountain is an excellent example of old growth hardwood forest and hardwood succession following wildfire. Two rare plants – white baneberry and moschatel – are found here. Duluth: The Down Up North Parent Group of Duluth and the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota will be hosting the 11th annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk in the Pioneer Hall at the DECC. Proceeds benefit individuals with Down Syndrome and their families, expectant parents and grandparents and healthcare professionals. This event includes refreshments and snacks, entertainment, fun and games. Rain or shine. Check in at 12:30 p.m.

Monday

Superior: The author Linda Berg, author of ‘The Kissing Pot’ will share her short story, and the stories behind her story, at a chicken Kiev dinner that will be served at 6 p.m. Oct. 5. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased by Oct. 1. The dinner is to help raise funds to send women to the Women of Faith Conference. Tickets are limited. Superior: A Cancer Prayer Support Group will meet from 2-3 p.m. at Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, 4020 S. Darrow Road. Current cancer patients, those in remission, and their caregivers are encouraged to attend. Duluth: A reception for “Wayne Miller On Sight: A Photographic Retrospective takes place from 6-8 p.m. on the UMD campus. There will be a visual culture lecture from 6-7 p.m. in Montague Hall 70 with Paul Berlanga followed by a catered reception and music from 7-8 p.m. at the Tween Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the public.

Duluth: Meet at the Park Point Recreation Center parking lot near the soccer fields at 6:30 a.m. for autumn birding strolls with Erik Bruhnke sponsored by the Duluth Audubon Society. Free.

Duluth: Sustainable Twin Ports hosts Creating a Sustainable Twin Ports Early Adopter showcase from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the August Fitger Room of Fitger’s Complex, 600 E. Superior St.

Superior: The Eagles Auxiliary will hold a meat raffle at 6:15 p.m. From 5-7 p.m. the group will serve Coney’s. All monies raised will go to local charities.

Superior: Thaddeus Kosciuszko Society (Polish Club) meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 1710 N. 12th St.

Duluth: The Mental Health Support Group will meet at Miller Dwan Medical Center, 502 East 2nd St., meeting rooms 1-3, lobby level, Eastside near the auditorium from 5-7 p.m.
