The Northwestern High School boys and girls cross country teams both picked up wins Monday at the Cumberland Cross Country Invite.
The Tiger girls finished 25 points ahead of Bloomer to win, and the NHS boys were 31 points better than second-place Chetek-Weyerhaeuser.
“Both teams were focused for this meet,” said NHS coach Phil McGrath. “We haven’t seen a lot of conference action, so the athletes wanted to get out there and see how we stacked up against these teams.”
Jordan Johnson and Emma Nelson helped lead the Tigers to a team victory for the girls with a 1-2 finish. Johnson won in 15:31.6, and Nelson finished 30 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher with a time of 16:05.9.
All five of the Tigers’ scoring runners finished in the top 10 as Michaela Ruhman took sixth, Carmen Ormston took eighth and Tess Nelson took tenth.
The Tiger boys also placed all five runners within the top 10 in their victory. Ryan Lind was the boys champion with a time of 16:57.8. Kyle Rautio finished fifth overall, Travis Sznaider was seventh, Ty Rankin was eighth and Mason Lombard was ninth.
The Tigers compete in the Roy Griak meet Saturday, hosted by the University of Minnesota, and travel to the Hayward Invitational Tuesday.
Northwestern’s regular season concludes with the Heart O’ North Conference meet Oct. 9 in Spooner.
