Yellowjacket men’s soccer team improves to 7-3

UWS volleyball and women's soccer teams also in action

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s soccer teams, as well as the Yellowjacket volleyball team, were in action this past weekend.

Men’s soccer

The Yellowjacket men improved to 7-3 with a 3-1 win over Bethany Lutheran Tuesday afternoon at the Superior High School soccer fields.

Junior Ben Royce scored twice and sophomore Ben Kasper once for UWS. Richard Chegwin assisted on Royce’s first goal while Collin Frisco helped out on his second, which came in the 90th minute.

Ryan Behmer scored unassisted for Bethany Lutheran.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Elder made one save for the Yellowjackets and Noah Heidorn had four for the Vikings.

In another nonconference game Sunday in Dubuque, Iowa, Loras College scored two first-half goals and made that lead hold up Sunday as the host Duhawks beat visiting Yellowjackets, 2-1.

Royce cut the lead to one early in the second half when he scored on a cross pass from Kasper in the 50th minute. But UWS was unable to close the gap the rest of the way against Loras (9-1-1 overall), which had a 20-8 edge in shots on goal.

Elder had five saves in the game; junior Dylan Milkent had one save for Loras.

The Yellowjackets host UW-Oshkosh at noon Saturday at Public School Stadium in Duluth.

Women’s soccer

The Lady Yellowjackets fell to 2-6 on the season with a 4-2 loss to the Bethany Lutheran Vikings Tuesday afternoon at the Superior High School soccer fields.

The Vikings scored all of their goals in the first half, including two goals by Maggie LaPlante and once each by Morica Reinsch and Paige Taylor. Kathryn Schislow helped out on two goals and Taylor one.

Mallory Engen and Katelyn Adams scored for UWS. Engen scored with an assist from Sarah Johnson in the 86th minute and then helped out on Adams goal 1:05 later.

Alexa Mowery had six saves for the Vikings and Kalea Hatlewick and Alexandria Paige had one and three saves, respectively for the Yellowjackets.

Saturday afternoon in Menomonie, UW-Stout scored twice in the first half and went on to defeat the UWS women 3-0.

Sophomores Ashley Gibson and Dana Hentges scored their first goals of their collegiate careers for Blue Devils, who also had Alix Hyduke score her fourth goal of the season.

Paige had 11 saves for Superior and Robbie Shelby had one for Stout.

UWS hosts UW-Stevens Point at 2 p.m. Saturday at Public School Stadium in Duluth.

Volleyball

The Yellowjackets fell to 0-2 in the WIAC with a 3-1 loss to UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gym. UWS (12-4, 0-2) started the weekend with a 3-0 loss to UW-Whitewater on Friday night.

The Pointers won the first two games, 25-11 and 25-19. UWS won game three by a score of 17-25 before UWSP clinched the match with a 25-20 in game four.

UWS got 12 kills from Nikki Gosson, 19 digs from Farrah Wirtz, and 31 set assists from Keely Deadrick.

Whitewater (11-4 overall, 1-0 WIAC) won in straight sets — 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 — as Leanna Lillge led the way with 15 kills, while Kim Frei and Kelsey Nobilio tallied 37 set assists and 21 digs, respectively.

For UWS, Jessica Dvergsten and Jessica Zimmerman each had six kills, while Keely Deadrick chipped in 15 set assists and 15 digs.

The Yellowjackets will play in the St. Norbert Tournament this weekend. UWS will face Finland and Carthage College at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and St. Norbert and UW-Eau Claire at 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.
