UPDATED: Hurricanes storm past Northwestern

The Hayward Hurricanes defeated the Northwestern High School volleyball team 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-23) Thursday night in the NHS gym in Maple.

Hayward cruised to a 25-11 win in game one. The Tigers were within 10-6, but the Hurricanes scored 12 straight points for a 22-7 lead, which was too much for Northwestern to overcome.

The Tigers started strong early in game two, taking leads of 2-0 and 10-3. But after ties at 12, 14, 15 and 22, Hayward scored the final three points for the win and a commanding lead in the match.

The third game was just as close as the second with ties at 8, 10, 11, 13, 19 and 21.

Hayward took a 22-21 lead, its first since leading 5-1, then closed out the game and match with the final two points.

Connilyn Hursh had 10 kills to lead the Tigers, and C.J. Kahl finished with 10 digs.

Northwestern is now 4-6 overall and 1-4 in Heart O’ North Conference play.

The Tigers will host the Northwestern Zosel Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
