Evergreens pick up first win in eight-man football

After two disappointing second-half losses to start the season, the Northwood-Solon Springs football team built a lead Friday and carried it through the end of the game.

The Evergreens defeated Winter 27-6 on the road to pick up their first win of the season in eight-man football.

“It was great to get our first win,” said Northwood coach Brian Trettin. “The kids are very deserving of it.”

Northwood (1-2), scored 14 points in the first quarter and held Winter scoreless until the final period.

“Our defense played an outstanding game. They really kept Winter on their heels the whole game,” Trettin said.

The Evergreens took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when quarterback Brett Missinne broke away for a 40-yard touchdown. Gage Harwick booted the extra point.

Missinne then completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Wilcox to add another six points for the Evergreens. Harwick’s extra-point kick was again good to give Northwood-Solon Springs a 14-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the fourth quarter. Missinne took the ball in on an 8-yard run, and Wilcox followed with a 33-yard sprint.

All but 17 of the Evergreens’ 310 total yards came on the ground. Missinne led the Evergreens with 166 yards rushing, followed by Wilcox with 110 yards rushing.

Defensively, Trettin said the Evergreens met all of their goals, which included holding Winter to less than 125 total yards and picking off at least two passes. Mason Barth and Brady Vig each had an interception for the Evergreens. Missinne and Trevor Lafave led the team in tackles. Lafave had nine tackles and 2.5 sacks, and Missinne had 10 tackles and one sack.

“Brett Missinne and Trevor Lafave had an outstanding defensive game,” Trettin said. “It was nice to see them do well.”

This week the Evergreens take on the Siren Dragons in Minong. It will be the first home game of the season for Northwood-Solon Springs.

“Looking at our schedule since the scrimmage, we have been on the road for five weeks in a row including one bye in there,” Trettin said. “It will be great to play in front of our home crowd (and for them) to finally see what eight-man football is all about.”

Game time is 7 p.m. Friday. The Evergreens will also be hosting a Ford test drive event at Northwood School from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We can raise over $8,000 if we have enough people test drive cars,” Trettin said.
