Tempting treats served for the animals

A love of animals prompted Emma Eibon, 9, and Anna Downs, 10, to fill a niche for thirsty and hungry shoppers participating in East End Days on Saturday.

The girls baked cupcakes, popped popcorn and made lemonade to sell — their goal was to raise money for Animal Allies in Superior.

Despite being off the beaten path for the traditional East End rummage sale extravaganza, the girls managed to raise about $80 dollars selling their treats for just 50 cents each.

They might have done better if they had been a couple blocks over, said Emma’s grandmother, Sue Seikkula.

The girls worked hard to make the treats, Seikkula said.

And the fruit of their labor will benefit Animal Allies.

Emma is planning to use the money raised to do some shopping for the animals at the shelter to fulfill needs on the Animal Allies donation list.

“She loves to shop for animals so they’re going to go shopping,” Seikkula said.

“I just want to make sure they don’t run out of food and water,” Emma said.

In addition to food, she’s planning to buy treats and toys for the dogs in the shelter.

“I hope their injuries get better and are treated right,” Anna said of the shelter animals.

And she knows what it takes to care for animals; after all, Anna has two dogs, a cat and two Guinea pigs at home. Emma has two dogs also.

“She’d have a 100 of them if her parents let her,” Seikkula said of her granddaughter.
