SPARTAN RDP: SHS volleyball team sweeps Marshall

After finishing second last weekend at the Hudson Tournament, the Superior High School volleyball team swept Duluth Marshall 3-0 Tuesday night in the SHS gym.

The Spartans improved to 4-6 on the season with wins of 25-20, 25-8 and 25-18 over the Hilltoppers.

For Superior, Jessica Lindstrom had five digs, six kills and six blocks; Lily Kline had eight kills and four blocks; Alison Wainionpaa had 12 set assists; Shannon Johnstad had three setting assists and three blocks; and Ellen Stromgren chipped in with three kills, three service aces and three blocks.

For Marshall, Maddie Schenk had two ace serves, two kills and seven setting assists; and Sydney Adams added three kills and went 100 percent serving.

On Saturday, Superior defeated Hudson 2, Somerset and Menomonie to finish first in their pool. The Spartans then met host Hudson 1 in the championship game where they were defeated 26-24 and 25-22.

“After having a rough weekend at the Marshfield Tournament the previous weekend, the girls turned things around,” SHS coach Mike Patenaude said.

Superior was led by Alison Wainionpaa’s 51 set assists and Jessica Lindstrom’s 35 attack kills.

“This week we worked on the mental part of our game by re-learning to celebrate the points that we win and not get down on the points that we do not win,” Patenaude said.

To cap the week of mental training, all three Spartan teams also attended the Minnesota Duluth vs. Northern Michigan game on Tuesday night where all players were asked to watch the two college teams and how they handle adversity.

“We still have a ways to go, as we did have some mental collapses and loss of focus in the championship game versus Hudson,” Patenaude said. “However I’m very proud of the way the team responded to our practices this week and how they battled right down to the last point. That’s the kind of team that we want to be.”

The Spartans host Cloquet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Girls Golf

The Spartan girls took second place out of three teams at the Hayward Golf Club on Friday.

Hayward won the Heart O’ North Conference meet with a team score of 166. Superior was next at 229 and Barron carded a 244.

Samantha Aune led the Spartans with a 53 followed by Allison Shober, 57; Kali O’Neill, 59; Hailey Gronquist, 60; and Amanda Hinnaus, 61.

“I thought Samantha played very well,” SHS coach Andy Heytens said. “This was her lowest score of the season and I was impressed with her ability to keep the ball in play off the tee as well as her putting. We’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on short game work at practice and I feel that it is starting to pay off.

“Our girls have been very consistent all season shooting scores in the mid to upper 50s. I think if we can consistently lower our scores in the weeks to come, we have a good shot at advancing in the regional tournament on Sept. 26 at New Richmond Golf Club.”

Hayward golfers captured the top five spots, led by Brittany Neff, who won medalist honors with a 36. The Hurricanes are now 12-0 in the HON and 42-1 overall.

The Spartans hosted their final home meet and final conference triangular against Cumberland and Luck Tuesday at Nemadji Golf Course. They will then participate in the Northwestern Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Hidden Greens Golf Course in Solon Springs.

Boys soccer

Brett Pinney had a goal and an assist in the first half to lead the Proctor Rails past the Spartan boys 4-0 Thursday at the SHS soccer field.

Jarret Byrnes had 19 saves for Superior, which hosts Two Harbors at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Cross country

The Spartans were in action Saturday at the 37th annual Menomonie Relays.

Medals were awarded to the top four runners in eight divisions. The top runners from each school were broken up into separate races, starting with the No. 1 race, which included the No. 1 and 2 runners from each team. There were eight different races.

Winning medals for Superior’s boys team were Evan Walpole, third place in the No. 1 race; and Chris Carey, third in No. 2 race.

Among the girls, Leah Holmes was fourth in the No. 2 race; Rachel Dixon was third in the No. 3 race; Kali Krivinchuk was fourth in the No. 4 race; Natalie Kintop was second in the No. 5 race; Isabell Evavold was fourth in the No. 6 race; and Lorena Lane was second in the No. 8 race.

“The way they ran the event was kind of a neat idea as it gives a kid a chance to medal who usually is out of the medals,” SHS coach Dan Conway said.

Superior’s Malley O’Brien did not race Saturday due to an injury.

The Spartans are back in action at the Northwestern Invitational at 4 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Norwood Golf Course in Lake Nebagamon.

Girls swimming

Perennial powerhouse Duluth East dominated the 28th Annual Spartan Relays, winning 7-of-10 events Saturday at the SHS pool.

The host Spartan girls won two events while placing second in a field of eight teams.

SHS senior captain Tori Johnson, sophomore Kaitlin Heinen and freshman Alysha Johnson easily swam away from the field to win the 300 backstroke relay. Senior captain Grace Elonen and sophomore Kaitlin Sanders joined Johnson and Heinen in winning the 200 medley relay.

Superior’s 400 free and 300 breaststroke relays each swam close seconds to East. Divers Karrigan Grimstad, Giselle Sziron and Hailiee Mahan placed third to earn bronze medals, only narrowly missing gold.

Superior’s back in action at Saturday’s Chi-Hi Invite in Chippewa Falls. Swimming begins at 12:30 p.m. Divers will compete at the Soderlind Invitational at Denfeld on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the Spartans will travel to Proctor for their first LSC meet.
