The Northwood-Solon Springs Evergreens dropped to 0-2 this season in the Lakeland 8-man Football Conference with a 38-14 loss to Prairie Farm (2-0) on Friday.

The Evergreens led 14-12 at halftime but failed to score in the final two quarters.

“Two weeks in a row we go into halftime with a lead to watch it slip away,” said Evergreens coach Brian Trettin. “The score is not a great indication of the game we played. We just had a couple at the end get away from us.”

Northwood-Solon Springs finished with 210 yards rushing and 60 yards passing. Austin Meyer, who scored both touchdowns for the Evergreens, led the team on the ground with 82 yards rushing. Meyer’s first touchdown came on a nearly 60-yard run, and the second came on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Brett Missinne. Gage Harwick made both extra-point kicks for the Evergreens.

Braxton Phillips, who had been out with a knee injury, returned to run for 75 yards Friday night for the Evergreens. Missinne added 53 yards on the ground.

On defense, Harwick led the team with 10 tackles and one sack. Missinne also had a sack for Northwood-Solon Springs, and he and Wilcox finished with eight tackles each.

“It was a very physical football game tonight, a lot of hitting going on both sides of the ball,” Trettin said. “I told the kids at half that this was a heavyweight bout going 12 rounds and we need to finish this one. I guess we will have to learn this week to finish games.”

One improvement Trettin was happy to see was a reduction in the number of fumbles for the Evergreens. In their season opener, the Evergreens had four fumbles.

“It was nice to see that we only fumbled once, but a couple of untimely penalties hurt us,” Trettin said. “We need to find ways to finish games. Our kids fought hard to the end, but we keep coming up short on the scoreboard.”

Northwood-Solon Springs plays at Winter Friday, with the game beginning at 5 p.m. Both teams are looking for their first victory of the season.

On Sept. 21, the Evergreens will play their first home game of the season, hosting the Siren Dragons.
