SHS netters come up short vs. Hawks

The Superior High School girls tennis team lost a very close match at home Thursday against the Hermantown Hawks.

The Spartans picked up one victory in singles, with Lindsey Sommer winning her match in No. 4 singles. In doubles play Superior rebounded with a pair of wins — Harmony Clarke and Brianna Homich at No. 2 doubles and Carly Webber and Nicole Mattson at No. 3 doubles — but the Hawks held on for the 4-3 team victory.

Superior’s next game is Tuesday at Duluth Marshall.

Thursday’s Results

1. Madelyn Miller (H) def. Cassie Hanson (S), 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

2. Danielle Lake (H) def. Keely McCall (S), 7-6, 6-1.

3. Bailey O’Connell (H) def. Carrisa Welch (S), 6-2, 6-1.

4. Lindsey Sommer (S) def. Stephanie Collins (H), 7-6, 6-3.

Doubles

1. Anna Vandeel/Mariah Ruhanen (H) def. Jess Engstrom/Sarah Olson (S), 6-4, 6-1.

2. Harmony Clarke/Brianna Homich (S) def. Elizabeth Heehn/Jordan Cura (H), 6-2, 6-4.

3. Carly Webber/Nicole Mattson (S) def. Rebecca Hennison/Madeline Bremel (H), 6-0, 7-5.
