Local Red Cross responds to Hurricane Isaac

While the American Red Cross mobilizes nationally in the wake of Hurricane Isaac’s landfall along the Gulf Coast, Red Cross workers as far north as Duluth are lending a hand to those affected.

While the American Red Cross mobilizes nationally in the wake of Hurricane Isaac’s landfall along the Gulf Coast, Red Cross workers as far north as Duluth are lending a hand to those affected.

The Northland Chapter sent three workers, including chapter board vice-chair Marty Mehling, to the region. Also deployed were Diane Dunder of Superior, and David Gearou of Two Harbors. The chapter’s Emergency Response Vehicle will be used to deliver food, water, and supplies throughout the affected region.

“In addition to sending staff and resources, the Northland Chapter is working especially hard to help raise millions of dollars the Red Cross will need to respond to this emergency.

“People can click or text to donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling (800) 733-2767 or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation,” chapter executive director Judy Hanne Gonzalez said. “We are approaching foundations and corporations for their support and would be grateful to hear from groups that would like to help.”

Contributions may also be sent to your local Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross chapter at 2524 Maple Grove Road, Duluth, MN 55811 or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.

In addition to supporting national relief efforts, the Northland Chapter responds to about 100 local disasters annually. Red Cross disaster relief includes emergency housing, food, clothing, medicine and medical supplies, eyeglasses, health services, and disaster counseling. Relief takes the form of preloaded debit cards used in local businesses by clients.

The Northland Chapter gratefully acknowledges Grainger and Enbridge Energy as lead sponsors of the Northland Chapter’s Disaster Partners program. For more information, call (218) 722-0071.
