The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Macalester College Friday afternoon at Duluth East High School.
Macalester scored the only goal of the first half when Chris Kartheiser scored in the 24th minute with an assist from Will Mackaman.
Alex Young tied it up for the Yellowjackets in the 66th minute with an unassisted goal and Ben Kasper scored the winning goal at 87:58 with assists from Alberto Rivero and Nate Engel.
Matt Elder had one save for UWS and Ben Carr had seven for Macalester.
The Yellowjackets host Concordia at noon on Sunday at Duluth East.
UWS women drop opener
The UWS women lost its season-opening game to St. Catherine (St. Paul, Minn.) 7-1 Friday afternoon at Lincoln Park Middle School in Duluth.
The Wildcats scored three goals in the first half and four more in the second as they outshot UWS 28-6 overall. Katelyn Adams scored the Yellowjackets’ lone goal at 70:10 in the second half. Chelsea Cossin assisted.
Danielle Mendez made two saves for St. Catherine, while Kalea Hatlewick stopped seven for UWS.
The Lady Yellowjackets host Minnesota-Morris at noon on Sept. 8 at the Superior High School soccer fields.
