MILWAUKEE (AP) — The majority of Wisconsin banks were profitable in the second quarter.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. shows 92 percent posted gains, the highest level in more than four years. A year earlier, 86 percent of banks were in the black. All but 22 of 271 state institutions posted a profit in the quarter ending June 30.

Seventy-one percent of Wisconsin banks had higher earnings compared to the first half of 2011. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says Associated Bank of Green Bay ranks first in net income for the quarter at about $52 million.

The biggest loss in the quarter was $11 million at Guaranty Bank of Brown Deer.
