The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has released its Scholastic Honor Roll for the 2011-12 academic year and the University of Wisconsin-Superior landed 156 student-athletes on the list, marking the third consecutive year that the number of Yellowjackets making the honor roll has increased.
To qualify for the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, student-athletes must achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. Conference-wide, nearly 50 percent of the more than 5,000 student-athletes in the WIAC garnered academic honors.
“Our student-athletes have done a tremendous job of buying into our philosophy, which focuses on not just the sports but also academics and community,” athletics director Steve Nelson said. “They put a tremendous amount of time and effort into their academics and sports and this is a great honor for each of them. It says something about the character of people that our coaches are recruiting to be a part of our programs.”
The WIAC also presented an all-academic award to institutions that had a grade point average for its student-athletes that was equal to, or greater than, the grade point average of the overall student body.
Yellowjacket student-athletes received the honor for the sixth straight year and for the 10th time in the last 11 years by having a cumulative grade point average of 3.057. The overall student population at UWS earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.932.
UWS was one of five WIAC schools to receive the award, joining UW-Eau Claire, UW-Platteville, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater.
“We truly believe that our student-athletes set the standard at UWS. These young people are tremendous at balancing time to play sports, work jobs and study,” said Nelson. “They set an example for other students and are people that our institution and the community of Superior as a whole can really look at and be proud of.”
Individuals who were named to the honor roll receive a certificate of achievement, while universities that receive the all-academic award will receive a plaque to mark the honor.
