A 47-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly driving the car that struck a Superior man in a fatal hit and run accident Friday night. The victim has been identified as Eugene David Renko, 61, of Superior. The man accused of hitting him is Jeffrey Swager, according to a news release from Deputy Chief Nick Alexander.
Officers from the Superior Police Department responded to a hit and run accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Broadway Street and Hughitt Avenue.
The striking vehicle left the scene but was located in St. Louis County, Minn. in the early morning hours on Sunday. Subsequent investigation led to the identification of the driver as Swager, whose last known residence was in Superior.
A detective from the Superior Police Department made contact with Swager on Sunday afternoon and he was lodged in the Douglas County Jail on a charge of hit and run-involving a death, a class D felony which can carry a fine not to exceed $100,000 or imprisonment not to exceed 25 years or both.
No charges have been filed at this time, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. The incident remains under investigation.
