‘Focus on the Children’ nets national honors

Alexis Apostellis and Jade Amys received a gold medal for their Focus on the Children project at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference on July 12 in Orlando, Fla.

Alexis Apostellis and Jade Amys received a gold medal for their Focus on the Children project at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference on July 12 in Orlando, Fla.

Their project involved working on literacy with children at Northern Lights Elementary, collecting books for Harbor House and raising money to buy books for Northern Lights. Their focus was to improve literacy by reading with young children in the Northern Lights after school program, providing parents with a brochure they created which encouraged parents to read with their child, and giving books to Harbor House crisis shelter so clients could read while they were there as well as take books with them when they left.

The district literacy coaches were a great help in proving background information for this project and the Northern Lights teachers were great supporters.
