Duluth woman charged with stealing from tills

A Duluth woman accused of stealing money from the tills of two Superior stores made an initial appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court last week.

Arlanda Mae Hancock, 31, faces felony robbery charges with use of force and theft from person or corpse as well as two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.

According to the complaint:

Hancock went up to the counter at the Superior Walgreens at approximately 3:30 a.m. June 26 to buy some candy. When the clerk opened up the till, Hancock reached across, grabbed several bills and attempted to flee. The clerk grabbed her arm, but she broke free and fled the store. About five minutes later, Hancock came up to the counter of Hammond Spur with an energy drink to purchase. When the till opened, she reached over the counter and grabbed change out of it, then fled.

She was identified by pictures on a cell phone she dropped when she fled Hammond Spur. Both clerks picked her picture out of a photo lineup as the person who robbed their tills.

Hancock failed to make her initial appearance in June and a warrant was issued for her arrest. She made an initial appearance Friday. Cash bond was set at $2,000.

According to the criminal complaint, the two thefts combined netted Hancock less than $100. If convicted of the two felony counts, she faces a maximum sentence of 25 years imprisonment and up to $75,000 in fines.

Hancock is also facing charges of second offense operating while intoxicated and operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration in Douglas County from a separate 2011 incident and misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer and bail jumping for an August incident. Her next court appearance is today.
