Partnerships offer free mammograms

Uninsured and low-income women are more likely to die of breast cancer than women with easy access to screening resources, according to the American Cancer Society.

To combat this, Essentia Health-Superior has teamed up with local nonprofits and cancer prevention organizations for a free Mammography Screening Day on Wednesday in Superior.

Women who have their mammograms on that day will also receive a $10 gift card and a tote.

Enrolling is simple. Women eligible for Medicaid or Medicare should contact Harbor House Crisis Shelters at (715) 394-9608 or Northwestern Wisconsin Community Services Agency at (715) 392-5127.

Uninsured women between 45 and 64 should call Peggy Nichols at Douglas County Public Health (715) 395-1431 to find out about the Wisconsin Well Woman.

All these programs pay for mammograms and Pap tests and any necessary follow up testing. If treatment is needed, funds are available to pay for it.

Essentia Health’s partners for Superior Mammography Day are Harbor House Crisis Shelters, Northwest Wisconsin Community Services Agency, Wisconsin Well Woman Program, the Duluth YWCA and the American Cancer Society.
