Anne Archambeau, a 2012 graduate of Superior High School is one of four highly accomplished high school graduates to receive a Robert G. Porter Scholarship at the American Federation of Teachers national convention.
Each year, the AFT presents an $8,000 scholarship to each of four outstanding high school seniors who are the children of AFT members. Recipients must show outstanding service to their community and plan to pursue a career in labor, education, health or government service.
In addition to excelling academically, Archambeau has been extremely active outside the classroom. Beginning in her freshman year and continuing through graduation, she was a member of the Superior High School Mock Trial team. She mentored eighth and ninth grade students in reading. She became an activist on the issue of bullying, speaking on its dangerous effects and developing a presentation that became a regular part of orientation for the entire student body on the first day of school each year. She also helped raise funds for projects at the Golden Living Center and spent time with Alzheimer’s patients and other elderly residents there.
The Robert G. Porter Scholars Program is named in honor of the late AFT secretary-treasurer, who served for more than 30 years. Porter was known for his commitment to improving the quality of public education and public service.
“I am honored that I have been chosen to receive this scholarship, and so very grateful,” Archambeau said. “I am also thankful for the recognition, not only for myself, but also for great teachers like my mom.”
Anne Archambeau will be attending the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., in the fall, where she has been admitted into the honors program and plans to pursue pre-law studies. Her mother, Sandra Archambeau, is a member of the Superior Federation of Teachers, Local 202.
