Two drunk men thought they had gotten lucky Monday morning when they drove around with two women and who said they were going to a party. But police said after an armed robbery on the West Side that left one without most of his clothes, it seems more likely the pair was being set up.
A 23-year-old and a 34-year-old, both from Madison, met the women at a gas station on Verona Road, according to a news release. Since they were drunk, police said, one of the women drove on the impromptu double date while they drank and smoked marijuana.
The men thought they had arrived at a party when they got out of the car on Jacobs Way, but police said they were instead confronted by two masked men with guns. Authorities said the gunmen took jewelry, money, keys and a cell phone. They also made off with one man's clothes, shoes and socks, the release said. Police described the robbers as 6 feet tall, with T-shirts covering their faces.
"Standing in his boxer shorts and tank top, talking to an investigating officer, [one man] surmised they had been set up," police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
