In spite of all the efforts so far by the right to discredit the accomplishments of the Obama presidency, and these efforts will only get more frequent, dishonest and nasty as the campaign moves along — I really believe the president can and should be re-elected.
Let’s face some facts here folks. Mitt Romney is not a great candidate. He doesn’t relate well to regular folks, the 9-to-5, lunch pail-toting bunch. He’s more a cocktails-at-the-country-club type.
Romney won’t do well in the debates, and when left to fend for himself in front of a microphone he tends to get himself in trouble, but think about this fellow Democrats, John McCain was a terrible candidate, and even with the Caribou Barbie as a running mate, he still managed to get 46 percent of the vote. This wasn’t really much of a surprise, as American voters proved just how long their attention span was, when they re-elected George W. Bush.
This election is more about more than winning or losing; it’s about saving the American way of life as we know it. The ideologues on the right wing of the Republican Party have gone off the deep end, and what they’re espousing these days ... well, if it’s not fascism then its pretty darn close. These people have picked their sock puppet candidate, who will do or say anything his corporate bosses tell him to — anything to get elected.
The Republican leadership has already said the main goal of the party is to not cooperate with the president in any way, even if it means tanking the economy. This to me seems to be bordering on treason, their only goal is to get rid of Obama and take control of the government.
Because of the Citizens United Decision that allows the influx of unlimited anonymous donations the Republicans will have no problem raising much more money than what the Democrats can. The Republicans will be able to use this huge advantage in spending power to spread the lie that Obama is the cause for all of America’s ills. In reality, it’s been the same old Republican policies, going all the way back to the Reagan years that put us in the economic mess we’re stuck in. If they are elected you can plan on more of the same.
I think the president can win in November, I believe that to my very soul, but not if we sit home and wait for the other guy to do it, or have the idea that “my vote is only one and how important is it?” This is the most important election in my lifetime, if we let this one get away, I’m afraid we can say good-bye to American Democracy as we know it.
