Rampage win 14U Lake Superior Fastpitch League title

Fresh off their 17th-place finish at the 12U NAFA Invitational National Tournament in Eagan, Minn., the 12U Twin Ports Rampage girls fastpitch team won the Lake Superior Fastpitch League tournament championship with an 11-3 win over Hermantown Gold recently in Cloquet.

The Rampage earned a first-round bye with their 10-1 record and second-place finish in league play. In round two, the Rampage defeated Northwestern Black 14U 12-3. The Rampage took an early two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, scoring five in the second inning and five more runs in the third.

The Rampage were led by Brandie Goldberg’s complete-game three-hitter. At the plate, Erin Thompson went 3-for-3 with two doubles; Madysen Stariha was 2-for-2 with a triple; and Allie Thul, Erika Olson, Hannah Thul, Ashley Welsh, Lanie DeMeyer and Lexi Johnson all singled.

In round three the Rampage defeated the Superior 14U Menace 7-0. The Rampage again took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning and never looked back, scoring four more runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fifth.

Once again Goldberg led the pitching charge, only giving up three hits in a shutout effort. At the plate Stariha tripled and singled; Allie Thul doubled and singled; Erika Olson had two hits; Welsh doubled; and Jordyn Olson, Hannah Thul, Natalie Noble and DeMeyer added a single apiece.

In the championship game against Hermantown Gold the Rampage again came out swinging with four runs in the first inning, five in the second and two in the fourth for a final score of 11-3.

Goldberg and Stariha combined for a five-hitter on the mound while at the plate the Rampage were led again by Thompson with two hits and Stariha, Noble and DeMeyer with a hit apiece.

The Rampage (37-12-1) are back in action Saturday in Hudson for the annual Hudson Extravaganza Tournament. They will also play in at least one other tournament before the end of the season.
